WELCOME TO EGER, IN THE BAROQUE GEM OF HUNGARY!
Longing for something special? You are in the right place: History,
architecture, religion, thermal water, wine, gastronomy, festivals, sports, or just
some relaxation? – a wide range of options…
- Castle of Eger 1200 meters
Castle of Eger is almost a must for Hungarians, as the medieval castle walls, the mysterious dungeon corridors, the sight of brave men dressed in period clothes (not to mention when they also present their military skills...) captures imagination.
- Minaret 600 meters
What does a Turkish minaret look like? In Eger, you can go up the 16th century stairs (a total of 92 steps!) and you can enjoy the view of the city from the balcony. Breathtaking! (literally!)
- Archbishop’s Palace 700 meters
The Archbishop’s Palace is unique because it is a Baroque palace the only one in Hungary that is the archbishop’s home and office, but at the same time is open to tourists as a Visitor Center.
- Camera Obscura 950 meters
A magic tower? We have. The Camera Obscura (of which there are only three in the world, but in Eger there are still the original 18th century instruments!) is situated in the Astronomy tower of the Lyceum (University), the Astronomy Museum with the unique meridian (if you go in good weather, you can see when it is the astronomical noon time in Eger), the Magic Hall is full of fun experiments of physics and an old and rich collection of cameras and tape recorders. And if it was not enough, and it shouldn’t be, you have to see this too: The Archiepiscopal Library: old-old books, oak shelving system, a Kracker fresco on the ceiling, atmosphere, fragrance of old books...
- Kopcsik Marzipania 650 meters
Have you heard that pastry chefs can also win Oscars? The first room is full of such awards of Lajos Kopcsik, the dreamer and creator of Kopcsik marzipania(!). However, the real specialties only come in the following rooms: marzipan miracles, where it must be repeated: yes, it is all sugar! It is almost unbelievable, but a whole Baroque Room can also be seen, where, from the floor to the dog, everything is from sugar!
- Basilica of Eger 750 meters
It is a small town, but it has the second largest basilica in Hungary, and within it the second largest church organ in the country. It is an uplifting experience when the huge space is filled with the melodies of Bach or Gounot’s Ave Maria.
- Downtown Eger 1000 meters
Would you like to explore the city in a slightly different way? Walk around the the city center following the 1878 flood signs. There are 11 of them. But you can also ask for the help of a guide dressed in an authentic 19th century dress (there is one in the house too!).
- Trifla Restaurant 550 meters
By the way, frog... Eger used to be famous for frog legs. Now it can be tasted in the Trifla restaurant. If you want something less special, they still have a rich selection!
- Szépasszony Valley 2600 meters
Festivals? During the season there is a program almost every weekend, often based on wine, as Egri Bikavér is deservedly one of the country’s most famous wines, found at many famous winemakers to taste (and many, many other varieties too!) Yes, wine! Szépasszonyvölgy should not be missed. In the medieval cellars you can taste a variety of wines from different winemakers.
- Eger Thermal Bath 1600 meters
A thermal bath in the city center? This is also Eger! The Eger Thermal Bath, with its eleven indoor and outdoor pools, is only a five minute walk from Dobó square.
- Turkish bath 1400 meters
And that is not all! You want to enjoy a real Turkish bath atmosphere, where the healing water directly from under the mosaic of the pool bubbles up? Or would you like to pamper yourself with a Hammam massage? This all are possible in the 16th century Turkish bath in Eger.
Well, Eger is not a one-day program! Experience, enjoy, and the friendly, elegant the background is the Margaréta Garden Design Panzió and SPA!
